CBD & Pets
If you thought that CBD is only for humans, think again. CBD can also be consumed by your furry friend. There is a reliable amount of research and evidence done on dogs and cats that show CBD can benefit them just as much as humans.
Firstly, cats and dogs have an endocannabinoid system, just like us. This was discovered in the 1970s by researchers in Israel. They found that all mammals have an endocannabinoid system and that it works the same way as it does in a human.
So, how exactly can CBD help your pet?
Cats and dogs experience anxiety just like we do, but theirs is usually situational. For example, they may become very anxious when traveling in the car or during a thunderstorm or fireworks. Research has shown that CBD oil can reduce these feelings of nervousness and soothe your furry mate, which is great news. However, for those pets who suffer from behavioural or separation anxiety, it is advised that professional help works better in this case, as CBD oil alone may not be able to combat the issue.
It is not uncommon for an animal such as a dog to experience at least one seizure during their lifetime. In fact, according to Pets WebMD, roughly 5% of dogs suffer from seizures. Often, it is difficult for vets to figure out the underlying cause of a seizure in a dog (unless it is Epilepsy) and sometimes they are put on a medication to make sure they don’t happen again or reduce the severity of them. Instead of using medications that can have a number of nasty side effects, CBD can be used instead. It has shown to reduce the number and severity of seizures a dog has, which is the same with humans.
- Chronic pain
CBD can be used to reduce pain and inflammation in dogs and cats, just as it does in humans. This can be especially useful if you have an older pet that is suffering from arthritis as CBD can soothe pain in joints and muscles.
- Cancer & Nausea
Evidence shows that CBD can help stop or slow down the spread of cancerous tumours. It works by boosting the body’s immune system to help fight the cancer cells and it can kill cancer cells by interrupting the energy production process in these cells. If a pet is going through chemotherapy, CBD can help reduce any feelings of nausea the animal may feel as a result of the chemotherapy.
Next time you are thinking of medicating your furry family member, consider CBD as an option. You can find CBD-infused products for pets from your nearest CBD outlet or from pet stores.
