CBD for the Digestive System

Do you suffer from digestive issues?

If you suffer from digestive issues, CBD can be a fantastic and beneficial supplement to take. CBD combats inflammation and inflammation can be responsible for digestive pain and discomfort.

There are various gastrointestinal diseases and conditions that people can have. The most common ones include irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastritis, constipation, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Inflammation is present with nearly all of these issues, as well as other uncomfortable symptoms such as cramping, pain, bloating, gas and sometimes even weight loss. The other common factor these conditions share is that there is no known cure. They can be managed and sometimes people may only experience one flare up in their lives. But for many, these conditions can be chronic and debilitating.

How can CBD help?

Research has shown that products such as CBD oil can have a positive effect with cannabinoid receptors in the digestive and immune systems. CBD oil can relieve pain and inflammation for those who suffer from digestive issues. A study published in the National Library of Medicine, on mice, found that those mice who had intestinal inflammation had unusual levels of endocannabinoid turnover. This meant that their endocannabinoid system could not manage inflammation as opposed to a mouse who had no intestinal inflammation. Once they were given a dose of CBD oil, the researchers found that their inflammation and pain decreased as their gut stopped cramping and the muscles stopped contracting. People that take CBD oil can experience less inflammation, pain and intestinal paralysis. Other studies have also shown that if CB1 receptors located in the colon are activated, they can protect the colon against inflammation. CBD can also protect the digestive system against potential long-term harm. Enteric glial cells can be triggered to grow if there is an overactive immune response in the gut. This results in inflammation and pain – making GI conditions worse. CBD counteracts this response and also reduces cramping.

Other issues associated with GI conditions are anxiety, nausea and loss of appetite. CBD can assist with all these conditions, alleviating symptoms.

How to use CBD for GI conditions

The quickest way to feel the effects of CBD is through using a vape pen. However, the effects of CBD usually only last around 2-3 hours if administered this way. A CBD oil tincture administered under the tongue lasts for up to 6 hours and the effects are usually felt within 20 minutes. For direct contact with the digestive system, creams, lotions and oils can be rubbed onto the abdominal region. The effects of the CBD last for around 4-6 hours this way. Taking CBD orally through gummies and other products works well, but takes a longer time for the effects to come into play, as it has to travel through the digestive system before entering the bloodstream.

Compared to some medicines, CBD rarely causes side-effects when used correctly. This makes it a good choice for those who suffer from GI conditions. If you are pregnant, breast-feeding or taking any other medications, is it advisable to speak to your doctor about taking CBD to relieve digestive symptoms.
